Follow Up to Last Post

This is the Allen County Courthouse. I don't know if Peter did all the sculpting or which ones he did.

This is the Cook County Criminal Courthouse. The statues at the top are his work.

This is a King Gambrinus as he looks now. I'm not positive if he did this one but my grandmother wrote that he did a Falstaff character for the Gambrinus Brewing Company in Columbus. This statue was found in an out of the way park quite a few years after the brewery was destroyed. Someone "restored?" the statue and put it in front of another park in the Brewery district at 500 S. Front St. in Columbus. This is what he looks like now. I'm thinking they shouldn't have painted him.

He also did some work on the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis. These are some old pictures of some of the works in progress that I think might be at that Cathedral: Hiram Abbiff; Hiram of Tyre; and Solomon.

Family History

Seeing my great-grandfather's statue and the occasion of the Saville Family Reunion in North Dakota this past weekend (which we weren't able to attend), has inspired me to do some research online. The only information I found on the Quigley statue was something that said it was hand carved in France. Whether my great-grandfather was in France when he carved it or whether the website was in error, I'm not sure. I know that he came from Koblenz, Germany, and that he was in Paris for a while.

Here is more of his work on the Cook County Courthouse.

Peace and Wisdom:

I'm not sure where this one is located:

My grandmother wrote in one of her letters that he sculpted "Falstaff" at Gambrinus Brewing Company in Columbus, OH. I think this is probably it:

My grandmother also wrote that he did some work on the Scottish Rite Temple in Indianapolis, the Allen County Courthouse in Fort Wayne, IN, something at the Bartlett Ranch, Vermejo Park, New Mexico, and either the Capitol Building or the University in Madison, WI.
I also decided to look up to see if I could find any information about any of my ancestors at Ellis Island. They have a free website where you can look up info. I didn't find anything on Peter Toneman or William Tessar, but I did find that my dad's father, Ernest Saville, came on the RMS Teutonic in 1894 when he was 17 years old. This is the ship:

I also found a picture of couple taken on the deck of the Teutonic the same year that my grandfather came, but I couldn't download it. It was interesting to think that my grandfather may have been on the ship at the same time the picture was taken.

What a great way to spend a rainy Saturday morning!

An Evening to Save In a Bottle

Saturday evening, after the rain, was the kind of evening that makes me truly grateful for our home and that I'd like to save in a bottle for a gray winter day. I took some pictures:

Fun in Chicago!

Emily, Ella, and I took the train at noon on Sunday for our whirlwind trip to Chicago! We had a great time. Here are some pictures.

Thanks to Bob and his Hyatt Reward points we had a beautiful, luxurious, terrace room with a view of Chicago's famous water tower.

As soon as we arrived at the hotel a storm came up so we watched the hail fall on our terrace. After the hailstorm quit we walked around the block and ate at Bistro 110 (Mike, do you know that restaurant?)--the food was kind of disappointing.

We walked around a bit and came back to the hotel. Ella and Emily went for a swim in the Hyatt's luxurious pool. Back to the room where I soaked in the amazing soaker tub and then to bed. The next morning we headed to Starbuck's for some breakfast (As impressive as the hotel was, they didn't offer free coffee and continental breakfast, and room service was awfully pricey.) During breakfast I was wishing I knew the location of Quigley Seminary. We walked out of Starbucks and looked left, and there it was. We walked 20 steps and found the statue of Bishop Quigley that my great grandfather carved around 100 years ago. That was pretty exciting for me. I've seen pictures of it, but have never seen it in person.

Our hotel was right across the street from "American Girl" where we did some birthday shopping for Ella and then had lunch. The lunch was very good and quite fun, even though a little weird watching all the dolls being catered to.

Fitting room at American Girl with a fun view:

We did a little more walking around and shopping on the Miracle Mile and then we went for a carriage ride with Steve (the horse):

After the ride we did some more walking and then went to the lounge at the top of the John Hancock and were awed by the views:

Then back to Union Station for our tuckered out train trip back to Ann Arbor. There were a few delays and we got home about 12:15 this morning. Yawwnnn!

What a quick but fun trip! Thanks for including me, Emily and Ella!

V.B.S.

Vacation Bible School or Vacated Brain Syndrome??

Poor Tom was a victim of my Vacated Brain Syndrome twice yesterday. First day of VBS. Both of us need to get there early (in my case due to procrastination and needing to get the music necessities set up). We had to drive separately so that I could go to school for a meeting after VBS. Tom leaves. Half an hour later I get ready to go. Car won't start. Try it several times. No luck. Call Tom. He comes home and messes with the battery cable which has given us trouble before. Still no luck. Go back with Tom. Do the VBS thing. Go home with Emily so that I can borrow one of their vehicles since Bob is out of town. Get there. No purse. Left it in Tom's car who had to take a VBS helper home. Finally get a hold of him, purse is not in car. Oh yeah, it's under my music stand at church. Second trip out of his way to bring me my purse. Hours later, Tom gets home after golf, out to see what he can do about the car. Works for an hour. Why can't he get it to start? He's fixed this problem before. Ohhhhh! Oops! The car was in park the whole time.

Second day of VBS - I hope it will be a great Vacation Bible School day and not another case of Vacated Brain Syndrome. Uh! Oh! I was planning to post some weekend pictures--THE CAMERA BATTERY IS DEAD!!??

Happy "Pastor"versary

...as one of the children at church wrote in her handmade card. Yesterday Christ Our King celebrated Tom's 15th anniversary there with a surprise preacher and dinner. Most of you probably know how much Tom "loves" surprise parties, but it turned out to be a very nice event. Roosevelt Gray delivered a very nice, focused on Jesus, message. After late service there was a dinner where there was a special slide presentation (prepared by Heidi and Emily), Praise Team music, a comedy routine, presentations by Pastor Dean and the Chairman of the Elders, and then an "open" mike. Many people spoke and that's when it got emotional, especially when first Opa took the mike and then Mary. It was all very touching and a little like Tom was witnessing his own eulogy. Then they asked Tom and I to both say something. Tom is used to that, but me, not so much. But I muddled through it. There were also many generous gifts. I didn't get any pictures, but many other people did and perhaps I'll have some to post at another time.

Amazing God-incidence!

An awesome story of God at work: The second grade at Ann Arbor Christian had a balloon ascension. On each balloon they attached a Bible passage and the name, phone no. and email address of the school. They got about 7 or 8 emails in response - from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the farthest away, Maryland. The one from Maryland was unbelievable.

A man who does electrical work was working on the roof of a hotel. He related that a few years ago he and his 2 year old son were both shot in the head by a violent criminal. He was in a coma for 30 days. His son died. Last summer his brother (who was also his best friend and business partner) died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 30. He had been mad at God ever since all of these things happened and has not been to church. He said that as he was working on the rooftop he was "talking" to his brother as he often does while he's working because they used to do the work together. He felt something and the balloon landed right behind him. It had the words from John 3:16. He feels it was a message from God at just the right time and expressed his intention to go back to church that Sunday.

The 2nd grade teacher sent copies of the emails she received home with her students. One of the parents is a dad whose wife died suddenly this past February leaving him to raise a 2nd and a 3rd grade girl alone. He felt moved to email the man from Maryland. The dad was able to share his faith with the Maryland man and pray for him even though he himself is in the "anger" stage of grieving. Maryland man again emailed that he had gone to church on Sunday for the first time in years and that He sees God working through that balloon. He expressed his gratefulness for the gift of the balloon and the caring people at Ann Arbor Christian. I don't think the relationship is going to end with those few emails. God is amazing and good!

Scores and Statistics

Grandchildren Score:

Schroeder – 6
Patterson – 3

Schroeder – First Generation 2 girls/1 boy
Patterson – First Generation 2 boys/1 girl

Schroeder – Second Generation 1 boy/5 girls
Patterson – Second Generation 1 girl/2 boys

That means in order to keep the pattern going the Patterson’s need to add 3 more boys. Unless of course the Grand Haven branch of the Schroeder’s add more to the mix.

Joyce, I imagine that in 10 years we’ll know.

Saving the Trees

Exactly two years ago today, I blogged about the amount of end-of-the-year paperwork I had to do for my students. Today it starts again. However, thanks to some forward thinking practical people at LSEM, the paperwork is considerably less. In fact, my week will consist of a few meetings, progress reports, some filing, and some electronic communication. That's it! Yayy for saved trees!

Have a good week everyone. Spend a little time under a nice shady tree!
